On January 1, 1997, the Corporation of the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet was formed through the amalgamation of the Township of Alfred, the Village of Alfred, the Township of North Plantagenet and the Village of Plantagenet. Each of the former municipalities were divided into four (4) wards, as follows: Ward 1: the former Township of Alfred Ward 2: the former Township of North Plantagenet Ward 3: the former Village of Alfred Ward 4: the former Village of Plantagenet The interim Council from January 1, 1997 to November 30, 1997 was composed of all twenty (20) elected members of the former municipalities. As a result of the Municipal Elections held on November 10, 1997, the composition of Council was reduced to seven (7) members; the mayor, elected at large, and six members of council with two members elected from Ward 1, two members elected from Ward 2, and one member from Ward 3 and from Ward 4. In 2001, the residents of the Township were invited to create a municipal logo. On December 10, 2001, Council chooses the logo submitted by Mr. Pierre Yves Boudreault as the official municipal logo. Municipal offices include the Town Hall in Plantagenet which houses the Administration, Taxes and Public Works Departments; the Building, Planning and By-law Enforcement Departments are located in the Alfred office. There are three fire stations in operation in the Township; one in Alfred, one in Lefaivre and the other in Plantagenet. Six community centres and parks as well as five libraries provide leisure and cultural resources. We are located at the heart of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell which is comprised of eight municipalities and we are half-way between Ottawa and Montreal. |
