A strategic, choice, location, the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet is located within the United Counties of Prescott and Russell and is advantageously located between two major urban centres; Ottawa, 45 minutes to the west via County Road 17 and Montreal 75 minutes to the east via County Road 17 and Highway 417.  The US border at Cornwall Ontario is only 45 minutes to the south via County Road 9, Highways 417 and 138.  A ferry at Lefaivre provides direct access to the province of Quebec.

Another important feature is that Alfred and Plantagenet is ideally situated, close to both Ottawa's MacDonald Cartier and Montreal's Pierre Elliot Trudeau international airports as well as the Mirabel cargo airport.

The primary economic engine is agriculture.  As with the majority of the townships that make up the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, agriculture makes up a large part of the economic activity within the township of Alfred and Plantagenet.

The agriculture industry in Eastern Ontario differs considerably from that of the southwest of the province.  There is less commercial growing and more dairy farming.  In general, the topography and soil are less suited to intensive farming as to dairy farming.  This fact is particularly noticeable in Alfred and Plantagenet where dairy producers enjoy a reputation for having the highest daily output across Canada.

This being said the region also possesses a growing number of grain farms and several large vegetable producers operate in Alfred-Plantagenet.

Manufacturing consists mainly of small and a few medium sized operations.  Roughly, 60% of these are commercial or industrial, with a sprinkling of Information Technology businesses and 40% agricultural based companies.
