Waste and Recycling Information

Waste Collection

Waste is collected weekly. Each household is allowed a maximum of 120L per collection, being the contents of the municipal grey bin.

Your garbage must be at the curb before 7:00 a.m.

You must use the grey municipal waste bin.

Individual garbage bags may not weigh more than 30 lbs (13.6 kg) each.

Do not mix recyclable material into your waste.

Garbage containing inadmissible materials will not be collected.

Each extra garbage bag must be tagged with the yellow municipal tag. These tags can be purchased at the following locations:

Each bag tag costs $2. You must buy a minimum of 10 bags for $20.

Make sure that the sticker faces out to the street, so it is visible to the collection crew. Without the sticker, the collection crew will not pick up the bag.

Do not use tags for recycling, hazardous waste, bulky items or leaf and yard trimmings.

In areas where wild animals are a problem, please place your additional garbage bag in a container without a lid. The yellow label should be clearly visible on top of the bag.

Not Accepted Materials

The following materials will not be picked up during weekly collection:

  • Residue from construction, alterations, or demolition operations*
  • Organic waste
  • Carcasses or animal parts
  • Liquid waste
  • Electronics
  • Hazardous substances
  • Vehicles or parts
  • Fuel or gas tanks
  • Sawdust and/or shavings

On April 18, 2022, the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet implemented colour-coded stickers to identify issues with trash or recycling collection at individual households, and will no longer be collecting those that don't follow municipal regulations. These stickers will make it easier for you to understand why your trash has not been picked up.

The Township of Alfred and Plantagenet is responsible for waste management in the community. Learn more about

New Waste Bins

A waste container of 120 litres (32 gallons) marked with the Township's logo is given to each residence. This container is the waste limit for each registered house in the Township each week. No other container can be used for the weekly collection.

The container is the property owner’s responsibility at all time, and it must remain with the property, even if you sell your property or a tenant moves out.

Recyclable material can be put in a blue box, a clear bag or any container identified with an “R” or the word “Recycling.” Paper and plastic can go in the same container. For more information, visit Circular Materials' website.

Need to Replace Your Waste Bin?

Please note that if your container is lost, stolen or damaged, your replacement cost will be of $70.10. You can purchase a new container at the Town Hall located in Plantagenet. All broken containers must be returned to Town Hall.

Are You a New Resident?

If you are the owner of a newly constructed house or business, you may obtain a waste bin at the Town Hall for $40.30. If you are the new owner of an existing house, it is the responsibility of the previous owner to leave the container with the property. Please note that no other container can be used for the weekly waste collection.
