EMERGENCY SITE CLOSURE AND CANCELLATION OF CANADA DAY FESTIVITIES IN LEFAIVRE DUE TO TORNADO WATCH ALERT

Plantagenet, July 1, 2023 - The Township of Alfred and Plantagenet regrets to announce the immediate closure of the Canada Day celebration site in Lefaivre. This decision has been made in response to the tornado watch alert issued by Environment Canada at 1:06 p.m. today.

Environment Canada has warned of the possibility of a tornado, along with strong wind gusts up to 90 km/h, hail ranging from nickel to toonie size, and torrential downpours expected this afternoon and evening. This weather pattern poses a significant danger to public safety, and it is imperative that all residents and visitors exercise caution and take appropriate measures to protect themselves.

The Fire Chief of the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet, in consultation with emergency management officials and local authorities, has made the difficult decision to cancel the Canada Day festivities in Lefaivre. The safety and well-being of our community members and visitors are our utmost priority, and it is crucial that we respond responsibly to this potentially life-threatening situation.

"We understand the disappointment and inconvenience this may cause, particularly on this significant national holiday. However, I urge everyone to understand the severity of the weather conditions forecasted and comply with the necessary precautions to ensure their safety," said Yves Laviolette, Mayor of the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet.

He continued, "We strongly advise all residents and visitors in the affected area to take immediate action and seek shelter in a sturdy building or basement if threatening weather approaches. Stay tuned to local news sources and official emergency alerts for updates on the situation and follow the instructions provided by local authorities."

We are grateful for the understanding and cooperation of our community as we navigate this situation. We are working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
