The UCPR confirm their support for the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail Corporation

L’Orignal, November 23, 2021 – Following the announcement of the agreement in principle between VIA Rail Canada and the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail Corporation (PRRTC), the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) confirmed, at the Warden’s Banquet, their intention to continue supporting the Recreational Trail.

During the event held last Saturday evening, Mr. Stéphane Sarrazin, Warden of the UCPR, confirmed a financial support of $540,000 over a 10-year period to the PRRTC. More specifically, the funding provided by the UCPR will amount $70,000 annually for the first two years and $50,000 for each of the following eight years.

This financial contribution is intended to ensure a successful transition further to the acquisition of the Trail infrastructure by the PRRTC and help cover some of the costs associated with the proper maintenance of the facilities. Throughout this transition, the UCPR will also remain responsible for the seasonal brushcutting along the Trail.

“I would like to sincerely thank the UCPR Council for its commitment to preserve this gem for all the communities of Prescott and Russell while ensuring its sustainable development” said Mr. Pascal Roy, Director of the PRRTC. “I would also like to thank the Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Stéphane Parisien, and the staff of the UCPR for having negotiated in good faith with their counterparts at VIA Rail, allowing us to reach such a positive outcome.”

“It is clear that we still have work to do before reaching a final agreement, but we are grateful for the trust and patience of Trail users in our efforts,” added Stéphane P. Parisien, Chief Administrative Officer of the UCPR. “We are pleased to be able to support the PRRTC and are confident that all the elements are aligned to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Trail.”

In the coming weeks, the parties will continue their discussions to finalize the terms of the agreement and will share any new developments as they become available.
