TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet will hold a public meeting on the 16th day of September 2025 at 4:30 p.m., at the Town Hall situated at 205 Old Highway 17 in Plantagenet, to consider a proposed amendment to the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet Zoning By-law No. 2009-50, under Section 34 of the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990, as amended.
On September 20, 2022, the Council of the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet adopted a by-law concerning the protection of wetlands within its territory, specifically those located in regional natural heritage systems. This municipal initiative was developed in collaboration with South Nation Conservation. It originated from growing concerns about the loss of forest cover within the municipality, as well as concerns raised by the agricultural community regarding climate change, water levels, wind, and erosion.
The objective of the by-law was to define, identify, and protect locally significant wetlands to ensure the longterm ecological sustainability of the area. However, it has been observed that protecting these natural features can hinder commercial and industrial development in certain parts of the township. It is important to emphasize that the purpose of wetland protection was never to impede economic development.
To better balance environmental protection with development needs, it is proposed to remove the designation of locally significant wetlands from certain properties located along County Road No. 17, which have strong potential for commercial and industrial development.
