Plantagenet, ON
Today, MPP Stéphane Sarrazin met with Mayor Yves Laviolette to announce that the Government of Ontario is investing up to $8.7 million to rehabilitate and expand wastewater treatment infrastructure in the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet.

The funding comes from the province’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Health and Safety Water Stream (MHIP-HSWS), which has increased by $700 million for a total of $875 million to support access to safe drinking water, housing, job creation and protection for communities in the event of extreme weather events.
“The rehabilitation and expansion of the Plantagenet Wastewater Treatment System is a critical project that will support future growth while protecting public health and the environment. Modern, reliable wastewater infrastructure is essential to enabling new housing, creating local jobs and ensuring residents have access to safe, high-quality services. Our government is proud to work with the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet to deliver infrastructure that will benefit the community for years to come,” said Stéphane Sarrazin, MPP for Glengarry–Prescott–Russell.
The MHIP-HSWS funding will be used in Alfred and Plantagenet to rehabilitate and expand two sewage pumping stations and their associated force mains in the village of Plantagenet. The project includes installing remote monitoring with secure telemetry and analytics, variable frequency drives and pump control tuned to Best-Efficiency-Point, condition-based monitoring for predictive maintenance, self-cleaning wet-well geometry with solids-handling pumps and submersible mixers, odour control, and provisions for wastewater heat recovery and emergency backup power, as well as the replacement and upsizing of approximately 300m of force main at pumping station no. 1, and upgrade of roughly 970m of force main at pumping station No. 2.
“The Township of Alfred and Plantagenet is extremely grateful to the province of Ontario and our MPP Stéphane Sarrazin for recognizing the urgent need to modernize and expand the Plantagenet lagoon wastewater treatment system. The outcomes of this wastewater infrastructure project will improve the health and safety of our citizens and promote the preservation of the current housing supply within the community, while allowing for significant growth in Plantagenet for years to come,” said Yves Laviolette, Mayor of the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet.
This funding is part of a historic investment of $4 billion in the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP), included in Ontario’s $220 billion capital plan, the most ambitious in the province’s history, to build transit, highways, hospitals, schools and water infrastructure that enables new housing.
Quick facts
- In August 2025, Ontario increased the MHIP to $4 billion to speed up construction of homes and core infrastructure, such as roads and water systems. Since its launch in 2024, the MHIP has made about 800,000 more new homes possible.
- The MHIP is comprised of four funding streams: the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (HEWSF), the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing (HECS) Stream, the Health and Safety Water Stream (HSWS) and the Agriculture and Irrigation Stream.
- In January 2025, Ontario announced an initial investment of $175 million to launch the HSWS.
