On December 18, the council of the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet adopted its budget for 2024. The budget, of just over $17.5 million, includes a 3.8% increase in property taxes, which translates into an average increase of approximately $55 per residence in 2024. The budget also includes a $4.2 million investment in capital projects, including the rehabilitation of 7 roads.
Highlights of the 2024 budget:
Major investments in roads and related infrastructure ($1,802,285)
- Upgrading of the following seven roads:
- Paving of Concession 5 (County Road 17 to Boundary Road)
- Paving of Concession 6 (Route 14 to Route 16)
- Paving of Concession 9 (from County Road 9 eastwards)
- Paving of Concession 10 (County Road 9 to Route 11) - 50% shared with The Nation
- Paving of Route 14 (from Concession 5 to Concession 6)
- Paving of Principale Street East in Wendover (Route 25 to County Road 17)
- Plantagenet sidewalks on Water, Nation, Main, and Albert streets
- Dump truck box ($50,000)
- Municipal building expansion ($275,000)
Parks & Recreation
- Renovation of Alfred skate park ($198,000)
- Construction of an access ramp for Curran's Forum Community Centre ($20,000)
- Construction of an event stage at the Lefaivre Riverside Park ($178,655)
- Construction of a parking lot for the Plantagenet baseball field ($35,000)
- Construction of a pavilion at the Plantagenet baseball field ($25,000)
- Renovation of the cold room at the Wendover Community Centre ($30,000)
By-Law Department
- Installation of parking meters at the marinas ($45,000)
Economic Development
- Electric vehicle charging stations (x4) ($40,000)
The following grants are maintained/increased:
- Canada Community-Building Fund (Gas Tax) ($312,728)
- Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund ($516,319)
- United Counties of Prescott and Russell Road Fund ($245,000)
"Many thanks to the Council members and administration for an excellent job in preparing and discussing the 2024 budget. A moderate increase in the property tax rate was necessary to alleviate the impact of the rising cost of goods and services on future capital projects," said Mayor Yves Laviolette.
